ROTHBURY is guided by a bold sustainability mission. In addition to offsetting our own production, we wanted to offer fans the opportunity to offset their own travel impact. Healthy communities are built through responsible citizenship. It is our hope that the citizens of ROTHBURY will embrace this easy ‘one click’ opportunity to offset their travel to ROTHBURY.

Some people are able to give more than others. It is our hope that everyone will be excited to at least offset themselves. For those who can do more, we offer the chance to be a part of something even bigger - building solar power on a local school.

We are all directly and indirectly responsible for pollution. We live in our homes, drive our cars…and these activities put carbon into the atmosphere. In a nutshell, whatever pollution you add to the atmosphere, you can subtract by purchasing offsets. When you purchase these offsets, the money goes to programs that will reduce carbon in the future. You can choose to offset in a number of ways. ROTHBURY has chosen 2 ways to reduce our carbon, first by donating to the development of new wind farms, and second, by planting trees.  The best way to deal with carbon is to create less of it in the first place (carpool, ride a bike, use solar, biodiesel, etc). But for those items which you can not change, offsetting is, in effect, a way of balancing out that which you create.

ROTHBURY estimated our attendee travel as follows:
•    30% of attendees driving 200 RT miles / 2.5 attendees per car
•    50% of attendees driving 500 RT miles / 2.5 attendees per car
•    20% of attendees flying 2,500 RT miles / via commercial airline

Our collective carbon created will depend on how many attendees we have. However, based on this model above, our individual carbon output will remain the same regardless of how many people attend. Individually, we are estimating under .3 short tons of carbon per person, which $3 per person will safely cover. If any funds remain from this estimate, they will go to our Solar Schools Program.

ROTHBURY has proposals in from a number of offsetting organizations. Over the coming months we will select a reputable organization dedicated to building new wind farms. We will also select a proven tree-planting organization to complete our offsetting program.

ROTHBURY has selected Shelby High School as the first benefactor of our Solar Schools program. However, it is our intention to build as much solar power on local schools as we possibly can. The more we all give, the more we will be able to build. If not in year one, we do plan to build solar panels on additional schools over the years.

In a word, plenty. At a minimum, ROTHBURY has committed $50,000 to the Solar Schools fund. Because we have partnered with non-profit Black Rock Solar, we are able to keep installation costs low, meaning we'll be able to provide at least six kilowatts of solar power--more than enough to run the typical house!  And the great thing about solar power is that it lasts for decades. Over the expected 30 year life of the system, the solar array will provide at a minimum, approximately $40,000 in free, green energy--which can be better used for books, computers, and field trips--while keeping tons of carbon out of the atmosphere, and providing a rural school with an unmatched educational opportunity about renewable energy.  And if ROTHBURY raises more money from your donations, we'll build even more solar power, potentially enough to save $7,000 per year off their energy bills ($210,000 over the next 30 years)!

Our contract with the school system requires that the energy-bill savings are applied back to Shelby High School’s operating budget. In other words, Shelby High School will get to keep all of the saved money, to better their school in other ways.

There are a number of easy to use Carbon Calculators on the web. Here are a few links to help you get started:

However, you will be required to pay a ticket deposit so that you can get into the festival. Once all your shifts are completed, your deposit will be returned to you in full. •    Pre-event set up: implementing systems, creating waste recovery stations, hanging signage, etc.
•    Manning waste stations, helping the public understand which items go in which cans & why (compost, recycling, trash)
•    Manning the Green education areas, running contests, working with the public.
•    Collecting and transporting waste to our behind the scenes areas (with trucks, golf carts and the like)

sustainability

expand all

ROTHBURY is a festival that aims to have minimum impact on our planet, while having a major impact on its people. ROTHBURY is dedicated to running as close to a zero-waste event as possible. You can check out all details in our Sustainability Mission, by clicking HERE.

ROTHBURY is committed to reducing waste in every choice that we make. We will reduce carbon by reducing energy, and by supporting clean bio-energy. We will reduce trash by only using compostables, composting on site, and making this compost available to the local farmers for free. ROTHBURY is looking for the most ecologically & socially beneficial choices available to us in all that we do…from the stage construction, on down to the TP in the porta-potties. Want to make a suggestion? greening at rothburyfestival dot com.

Yes. ROTHBURY will provide full-service throughout the festival grounds. All recycling can be mixed except paper and cardboard. That means plastic bottles and aluminum cans may all go in the same bin (please remember there is no glass allowed on the site). Easy! Anywhere you see a trash can at ROTHBURY, you will also see recycle cans. Each will be labeled clearly, so please be sure to pause, read them, and select accordingly. Please recycle whenever possible!
Yes. Those paper-looking plates you are eating from? They are really sugarcane, and are compostable. Same with the beer cups – they look like plastic, but they are made from corn. In fact, every food service item handed to you will be made from plant-based sources and will end up in the local soil on the farm. ROTHBURY will provide composting stations throughout the grounds, for your convenience. However, due to the difficulty with tainting at such a large event, we will not have compost cans in every location that we will have trash & recycling. Instead, we will only have compost bins in the areas manned by our Green Team. We of course will position these bins in the most active food-oriented areas, including near the stages, in food vending areas, and in the camping fields. Please dispose of your compostable materials at the designated compost cans.
The ROTHBURY property is an expansive area, and as such, will require a number of energy sources. Our main infrastructure (lodging, shops, etc) will run ‘on the grid’ with normal (plug-it-in) electricity. However, we will carbon off set all of this energy use. As for the aspects we will be bringing in just for the festival (likestages, light towers, etc), we will run them on a variety of clean energy sources including biodiesel and solar. Please check back here later for more details on exactly which parts of ROTHBURY will run on which clean energy sources.

Rothbury is a beautiful area full of farms, lakes, and a lot of greenery.  Please respect our Rothbury neighbors. When traveling through the town, if you are tired/late/etc, please remember to be friendly ~ they are our hosts, and we want to be gracious. Please keep local gas station bathrooms clean, tie down any trash you might be transporting, etc. Another great way to assure that the town of Rothbury welcomes us long term, is to help their local economy thrive. Please try and fuel up locally, fill your coolers locally, etc.
Chances are that your travel will have an impact on the environment. ROTHBURY encourages all attendees to offset their travel, just as we are. Check out our Green Ticket options for details.

If you drive a biodiesel vehicle, no doubt you will be looking to fuel up in the area. Our friends at the Nation Biodiesel Board have put together this comprehensive list of fueling stations throughout the state of Michigan, for your convenience. On their site, you can look for stations in any other states you will be driving through as well. Just be sure to call the locations before showing up, as things do change and we wouldn’t want you to get stuck!

No, some areas will go later then others but the main area will close shortly after the last show of the evening.

One empty water bottle per person (up to 1 gallon) to use at refilling stations (see next question for more on this) Or - one sealed water bottle per person (up to 1 gallon) should you prefer to bring your own water in

Small personal/disposable cameras
Low backed beach chairs
Towels & blankets

Yoga Mats

Camelpaks and other reservoir backpack must be empty upon entry to the festival grounds

* please note all bags are subject to search every time you enter the grounds

You can bring as much opened/unopened water as you please to ROTHBURY for camping, washing, refilling, etc. There will be free refilling stations throughout the campgrounds. Inside the main festival area, you are allowed one sealed water bottle per person (up to 1 gallon) OR one empty bottle per person (up to 1 gallon) to use at refilling stations. We are making best efforts to reduce the amount of bottles in our environment by providing free refilling stations. While we will have refilling stations in the festival (concert) areas, please understand that the lines could be long, and the water might be a bit warm (water trucks do not come on ice). Bring a big bottle so you don’t have to fill up as often – up to 1 gallon allowed. We have done our best to provide a way to reduce the number of bottles used. Unfortunately our solution will not be as convenient as buying bottled water. However, the GREAT news is that if you choose to buy water, you have the opportunity to participate in an incredible project by purchasing Earth Water. Earth Water is a project that benefits the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). Every dollar of profit that Earth Water makes goes directly into building wells in refugee camps.  Just $500 builds a well! So if you do choose to buy their water, you can feel good about the fact that you are supporting an incredible program that helps those less fortunate than ourselves. ALSO - Please recycle actively – we have recycle stations all over the grounds. But please be sure the throw away the lid first – they do not accept lids in this area. Yearly, Americans drink over 150 bottles of water each, but recycle less then 40 of them, which equals about 50 billion plastic bottles consumed, with just over 20% recycled. That leaves 38 billion water bottles in landfills every year in the USA  - Yikes! Let’s make sure that not one single one of them comes from us.
